Number of countries with laws and regulations that guarantee full and equal access to women and men aged 15 years and older to sexual and reproductive health care, information and education

Definition

In Denmark, laws and regulations guarantee full and equal access to sexual and reproductive health services, including free access to abortion. Comprehensive sexuality education is mandatory in primary and lower secondary schools, upper secondary education programmes, the Preparatory Basic Education programme (FGU), and the first foundation course of vocational education and training programmes. For Specially Organised Youth Education (STU), specific guidelines and recommendations have been developed.

The Consent Act (effective from 1 January 2021) strengthens the right to sexual self-determination as a legal framework that supports individuals’ ability to make informed decisions about sexual relationships, including the right to refuse consent.

Under the new abortion Act (effective from 1 June 2025) women have gained, among other things, access to abortion later in pregnancy, up to the end of the 18th week of gestation. In addition, young women aged 15–17 can obtain an abortion without parental consent.
