Definition

The indicator is calculated by Statistics Denmark based on the Land Accounts and population statistics. It shows how land used for built-up areas have developed in comparison to population growth. When the indicator is above 1, land consumption has increased more than population. Land used for agricultural crops is not included.

The development of the indicator’s three variables for 2021 and 2024 is calculated as the annual average over the past three years, while the development for 2018 is calculated as the annual average over the past seven years. The land account is part of Statistics Denmark’s green national accounts, and the indicator is therefore consistent with the principles of the international environmental accounting manual SEEA 2012, published by the UN, the World Bank, the IMF, the OECD, and Eurostat.
