3.c.1: Health workers

Health worker density and distribution

Definition

The UN website on Sustainable Development Goal data (SDG) data has, since 2000, published Danish-reported figures on the coverage of physicians, dentists, nurses, and pharmacists in Denmark. The figures show increased coverage over time, with the exception of dentists, where there has been a slight decline during the period.

For physicians, the figures represent an average across all medical specialties and mask a significant increase in the number of doctors working in hospitals in larger cities, while there has been no increase in the number of general practitioners with a background in family medicine.

The latest figures for 2023 show the following numbers of health workers per 10,000 inhabitants:

  • Dentists: 8
  • Nurses and midwives: 109
  • Physicians: 45
  • Pharmacists: 6 (2022 data)
