Persons resident at the same address, irrespective of family ties. Thus a household may comprise more than one family.
One or more individuals living at the same address who have certain relationships with each other. A family consists of a single person, a couple, or a non-resident child under 18 years of age. Persons under 25 years of age who live at home are considered part of their parents' family, provided they do not have children, are not married or previously married, and are not part of a cohabiting couple.

The purpose of the population statistics is to focus on the size, composition and development of the population living in Denmark. The statistics create a basis for a number of analyses on demography and society and are used as a basis for planning tasks on a national, regional and municipal level. In their basic form, the statistics have been compiled since 1769 but have undergone a series of changes as society developed and legislation followed. Most of the present table series in Statbank Denmark comprise data from 2007 and forward, while a few of these go back further.
The statistics show the number of urban areas and the number of persons in each urban area and in the rural areas within each municipality. Statistics on urban areas can be found every 5th or 10th year in the old census publications. From 1976 to 1996, information on urban areas was compiled every other year, since 1996 annually.
